Quick answers

How is CGPA calculated?

CGPA = Σ(Grade Point × Credits) ÷ Σ Credits across all semesters. Our calculators apply the exact formula for your university automatically.

CGPA to percentage — which formula?

Different universities use different multipliers. Use our CGPA to Percentage tool — select your university and it applies the correct factor.

My university isn’t listed

Request it through the form — we add universities regularly. Prioritised by number of requests received.

Is my data saved?

No. All calculations happen in your browser. We do not store your grades or results.

Common CGPA Questions We Get

What is the difference between SGPA and CGPA?

SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is your GPA for a single semester — calculated as the weighted average of grade points earned in that semester’s subjects, weighted by each subject’s credits. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the overall GPA across all semesters completed — the weighted average of all grade points in all subjects across your entire programme. CGPA is what appears on your final degree and is used for most external purposes (job applications, graduate admissions, scholarships). SGPA is used to track performance semester by semester and is often used to determine eligibility for scholarships or to flag academic difficulty early.

Why does my CGPA differ from what my friend calculated?

The most common reasons for discrepancies are: using the wrong grade point table for your university (each university has its own grade-to-point mapping); using the wrong CGPA formula (some universities calculate CGPA as a straight average of SGPAs, others recalculate from all individual subject grades); and using the wrong percentage conversion multiplier. Always verify which specific regulation your university is currently following — for example, Anna University students need to know whether they are under Regulation 2017, 2019, or another version, as the grade systems differ.

Can I use this calculator for my final official CGPA?

Our calculators are designed to give the same result as your university’s official calculation, but the official CGPA on your transcript and degree certificate is determined by your university’s examination system. Always verify important CGPA values against your official marksheet or transcript. If our calculator gives a different result from your official documents, please report it through the contact form — it helps us fix errors for all students.

For University Administrators and Faculty

If you are a faculty member, academic administrator, or examination officer at an Indian university and you find that our calculator for your institution is using outdated or incorrect formulas, please contact us directly. We maintain our calculators from publicly available official documents, but official contacts can share internal documentation that helps us update more accurately and faster than we could from public sources alone.

We welcome formal partnerships with universities who want their students to have access to a reliable, accurate calculator — particularly when a university is transitioning between regulation versions and students need help understanding the change. Contact us through the form above or email directly to discuss how we can support your students.

Understanding CGPA Discrepancies — What to Check First

Before contacting us about a calculation discrepancy, here are the most common reasons our calculator might give a different result from your official transcript, and how to diagnose the cause:

1. Wrong university regulation selected

Many universities have updated their grading systems over time. Anna University has operated under Regulation 2013, 2017, and 2019 with different grade points in each. VTU has updated its credit system multiple times. If you selected the wrong regulation version, the grade points assigned to each letter grade will be wrong and your CGPA result will be incorrect. Check your official admission letter or student handbook to confirm which regulation applies to your batch.

2. Input errors — credits vs contact hours

A common mistake is entering contact hours or lecture hours rather than credits. Credits are typically 3 or 4 for core subjects and 1 or 2 for labs in most Indian university systems. If you accidentally enter 45 (contact hours) instead of 3 (credits), the weighted average will be completely distorted. Verify your credits from your official curriculum document, not from your timetable.

3. Back-papers and arrear subjects

If you have appeared for a supplementary exam or back-paper, how the grade for that subject counts in your CGPA varies by university. Some universities count only the grade from the regular exam and do not update the CGPA for supplementary passes. Others update the CGPA with the new grade. Our calculators generally follow the standard rule, but if your university handles back-papers differently, please mention this in your message.

4. Grade conversion for subjects from other universities

Students who have transferred credits from another institution may have grades expressed on a different scale. The conversion of transferred credits to the host university’s grade scale is handled differently by each institution — usually through an equivalence committee. These converted grades may not follow standard formulas, which is why transferred credit subjects sometimes produce discrepancies in calculator results.

New University Requests — What We Need

When requesting a new university calculator, the more information you can provide, the faster we can build and verify the new calculator:

With this information, we can typically build and verify a new calculator within 1–2 weeks. Without official documentation, we cannot build a calculator confidently — incorrect formulas are worse than no calculator because they may give students wrong results they use in important applications.

About Our Team

cgpacalculation.online is built and maintained by a small team with backgrounds in software development and education technology. We are not affiliated with any university and do not receive funding from universities or government bodies. The site is entirely student-funded through advertising, which is how we keep all calculators free without paywalls, subscriptions, or data collection. We take accuracy seriously because we use this site ourselves and understand that incorrect CGPA information can genuinely affect students’ opportunities. Every error report we receive is investigated, and if a calculator is wrong, we fix it and note the correction publicly.

How Our Calculators Are Built

Every university-specific calculator on cgpacalculation.online goes through the same development process. First, we locate the current official academic regulations on the university’s official website — typically in the examination section or the academic regulations section of the registrar’s page. We read the grade point table, credit structure, and CGPA formula exactly as specified in the official document. We then build the calculator to implement that formula precisely, test it against worked examples from the official document, and cross-reference results with students from that university who have access to their official transcripts.

This process takes time but produces calculators that are genuinely accurate rather than approximately correct. The difference matters: a student who reports a CGPA of 8.4 when the correct CGPA is 8.1 may be above or below an employer’s minimum cutoff. Accuracy at this level of precision is not a nice-to-have — it can directly affect a student’s career opportunities.

When we receive a report that a calculator is giving wrong results, our investigation follows the same rigour: we go back to the official source, verify the formula, check whether the regulation has been updated, and correct the calculator if needed. We post a note on the calculator page when a correction is made so returning users know the formula has been updated.
