CGPA to Percentage — University-Wise Formula Guide

Different Indian universities use different formulas to convert CGPA to percentage. Using the wrong formula can misrepresent your academic record. Here is the correct formula for every major university.

Why the Conversion Formula Matters

Many employers, graduate schools, and scholarship programmes in India request academic performance in percentage form — particularly organisations that pre-date the UGC’s shift to CGPA, or those that compare applicants from universities with both old percentage systems and new CGPA systems. Using the wrong conversion formula can overstate or understate your academic performance, which has real consequences in competitive applications.

The most common error is using a 10× multiplier universally when some universities officially specify a different factor. Anna University is the most notable example — its official conversion under Regulation 2019 is 9.5×, not 10×. A student with CGPA 8.5 from Anna University has an official percentage equivalent of 80.75%, not 85%. Reporting 85% when the official conversion gives 80.75% is technically incorrect, regardless of intent.

Official Conversion Formulas by University

University Formula Example (CGPA 8.0) Source
VIT (all campuses) CGPA × 10 80% VIT Academic Regulations
VTU (CBCS) CGPA × 10 80% VTU Academic Regulations
Anna University (Reg 2019) CGPA × 9.5 76% AU Reg 2019 Academic Regulations
Anna University (Reg 2017) CGPA × 10 80% AU Reg 2017 Academic Regulations
SRM Institute CGPA × 10 80% SRM Academic Regulations
KTU (Kerala) CGPA × 10 80% KTU Academic Regulations
JNTU (various) CGPA × 10 80% JNTU Academic Regulations

Anna University — The 9.5× Exception Explained

Anna University’s Regulation 2019 introduced a specific conversion formula: Percentage = CGPA × 9.5. This was specified in the official academic regulations to align with the UGC’s recommendation while accounting for the specific grade boundary structure used in AU’s 10-point scale. Under AU’s grade boundaries, achieving the maximum grade point (10) requires scoring 91% or above — so a perfect CGPA of 10 should correspond to approximately 95% rather than 100%, which is what the 9.5× factor produces.

Students under Anna University’s Regulation 2017 use a 10× multiplier because that regulation had different grade boundaries. Students who completed part of their degree under Reg 2017 and switched to Reg 2019 mid-programme should check with their university’s examination section about which formula applies to their specific case.

When to Use an Official Percentage Certificate

For high-stakes applications — civil services, government jobs, overseas graduate programmes — relying on a calculator conversion may not be sufficient. Many of these contexts require an official percentage certificate issued by your university’s examination board rather than a self-calculated conversion. Check the specific requirements of each application:

What If My University Doesn’t Specify a Formula?

If your university’s official academic regulations do not specify a CGPA-to-percentage conversion formula, two options are recommended. First, contact your university’s examination section directly — many universities have an official position on conversion even if it is not in the published regulations. Second, for external applications, state your CGPA clearly and note that your university uses a 10-point scale without a specified percentage conversion — most Indian employers understand this situation and can work with CGPA directly. Avoid using a self-chosen multiplier without official basis, as it could be challenged during verification.

CGPA Ranges and Their Percentage Equivalents

CGPA (10-pt scale) × 10 (most universities) × 9.5 (Anna Univ Reg 2019) Classification
9.0 – 10.0 90% – 100% 85.5% – 95% Outstanding / First Class with Distinction
8.0 – 8.9 80% – 89% 76% – 84.5% First Class with Distinction
7.0 – 7.9 70% – 79% 66.5% – 75% First Class
6.0 – 6.9 60% – 69% 57% – 65.5% Second Class
5.0 – 5.9 50% – 59% 47.5% – 56% Pass
Below 5.0 Below 50% Below 47.5% Fail / Re-examination

Convert Your CGPA

Conversion in International Contexts

When applying to programmes or jobs outside India, understanding how your Indian CGPA will be interpreted internationally is important. The US GPA system uses a 4.0 scale; the UK uses percentage classifications (First, 2:1, 2:2, Third); Germany uses a 1.0–5.0 scale (reversed from Indian convention — 1.0 is best). International admissions offices at major universities have conversion tables for Indian CGPAs, but self-reporting the conversion correctly matters for initial screening.

For US graduate applications: Indian CGPA ÷ 10 × 4 is a rough conversion (8.0/10 ≈ 3.2/4.0). For UK classifications: 70%+ is typically First Class; 60–69% is 2:1; 50–59% is 2:2. For WES (World Education Services) evaluation — the most common credential evaluation service for Indian students applying to North America — their evaluation committee applies its own conversion methodology that may differ slightly from these rules of thumb. Always check the specific conversion methodology used by the target programme or employer.

Official Letters vs Calculator Conversions

For the most credible conversion, request an official CGPA-to-percentage certificate from your university examination board. This document, issued by the university on official letterhead, states the official percentage equivalent of your CGPA according to the university’s own formula. It is more authoritative than any calculator conversion and eliminates ambiguity about which formula was applied. Most Indian universities issue these certificates on request, typically within 1–2 weeks and for a nominal fee. For high-stakes applications — overseas immigration, UPSC applications, civil aviation licences — always use the official certificate rather than a calculated conversion.

Using Our Calculators for Academic Planning

Our calculator suite at cgpacalculation.online covers the major Indian university grading systems — VIT, VTU, Anna University (Regulation 2019), SRM, and KTU — with calculators built directly from each university’s official academic regulations. All calculators are completely free, work on any device without any app installation, and require no login or account creation. Your grades and credits are processed entirely in your browser — we never store or transmit your academic data.

Beyond simply showing your current CGPA, our calculators are most useful as planning tools. Before each semester, use the calculator to model different grade scenarios: if you achieve SGPA 8.5 this semester, where does your CGPA land? What SGPA do you need in remaining semesters to reach your target CGPA by graduation? Which subjects, if your performance improves by one grade level, produce the largest CGPA impact? These planning questions are easily answered with a calculator and extremely difficult to answer correctly from intuition alone — the weighted average mathematics are deceptive, and precise planning requires precise calculation.

For CGPA-to-percentage conversion, always use the correct university-specific formula. The most common error is using a 10× multiplier universally when Anna University officially specifies 9.5×. Our CGPA to Percentage Calculator applies the correct formula for each university automatically. For job applications, graduate admissions, and any formal context where you report a percentage equivalent of your CGPA, use our calculator to verify the figure before submitting.

We maintain all calculators from official university documents and update them when universities revise their regulations. If you find a discrepancy between our calculator output and your official transcript, please report it through our Contact page — student feedback is our primary accuracy verification mechanism, and we take every report seriously. A corrected calculator helps every future student who uses it.

Percentage in a Hybrid System — When Old and New Coexist

India’s higher education system is currently in a transitional period where institutions that previously used percentage grading have moved to CGPA, while some professional contexts (particularly government job applications and some older employer recruitment systems) still think in percentage terms. This creates a translation problem that students in the CGPA generation must navigate regularly: converting a 10-point CGPA into a percentage for contexts that were designed for percentage-based evaluation.

The long-term trajectory is toward greater acceptance of CGPA directly. The UGC has been actively encouraging institutions and employers to evaluate CGPA on its own terms rather than converting to percentage, recognising that conversion introduces a layer of approximation that may not accurately represent the original grade distribution. Several major public sector employers have updated their recruitment criteria to accept CGPA directly at the required threshold (e.g., “minimum CGPA 7.0 on a 10-point scale” rather than “minimum 70%”). As this trend continues, the need for CGPA-to-percentage conversion will gradually decrease — but for the next several years, students will encounter both systems regularly and need to navigate both correctly.

CGPA is one component of your academic identity — an important one, but not the only one. Approach it systematically using the formula-based understanding this guide provides, use our university-specific calculators to plan precisely rather than estimate roughly, and make deliberate decisions about how much effort to invest in CGPA optimisation relative to skill development, projects, and other activities that will matter throughout your career. The students who navigate Indian engineering education most successfully are those who understand the system clearly enough to make strategic choices within it — and understanding the CGPA formula completely is the foundation of that strategic clarity.
