Know the mathematicsHow CGPA Calculation Works
A cumulative grade point average summarizes performance across multiple courses or semesters. In a credit-based system, it is usually calculated by taking each grade point value, multiplying it by the eligible course credits, adding the results, and dividing by total eligible credits.
For Target CGPA Calculator, rounding should normally happen after the underlying computation unless a published regulation instructs otherwise.
That weighting matters. A four-credit course can contribute twice as much to the total as a two-credit course. Simply adding all course grades and dividing by the number of subjects can therefore give the wrong result. For more detail, see How to Calculate CGPA with Different Credits and Credit Weighted GPA vs Simple Average.
The main calculation in Target CGPA Calculator displays the assumptions instead of concealing them.
CGPA = Σ(Credits × Grade Points) ÷ Σ Credits
Before applying an output from Target CGPA Calculator, check whether pass-or-fail courses, repeat attempts, noncredit modules, and exceptional grades are included in the institution’s GPA rules.
What is the difference between SGPA and CGPA?
SGPA normally measures a single semester. CGPA normally brings together eligible work across more than one semester. An overall CGPA should reflect the credit distribution of the semesters, unless the university explicitly uses another aggregation method. Read GPA vs SGPA or GPA vs CGPA for explanations of common terminology.
A practical example for Target CGPA Calculator becomes meaningful only after the scale is known.
Worked example · illustrative 10-point scaleFour Subjects, One Semester GPA
Suppose a semester includes these four grade-point results.
Students may use Target CGPA Calculator to compare possible scenarios, but a receiving university can apply its own rules.
| Subject | Credits | Points | Weighted |
|---|
| Mathematics | 4 | 9 | 36 |
| Physics | 3 | 8 | 24 |
| Computing | 3 | 9 | 27 |
| Laboratory | 2 | 10 | 20 |
| Total | 12 | — | 107 |
Result: 107 ÷ 12 = 8.9167, or approximately 8.92 / 10 when displayed to two decimal places. Official rounding may differ.
